great video, thanks! Bonded nylon or polyester for leather sewing?
Hello Harry, I wanted to donate to that charity by purchasing the plans for your spoon mule but couldn't find the plans can you point me in the right direction? Thank you
Better to spraying the leather face by clear oil to let it slip easily..
Safety first...why did you removed the metal cover over the blade?!!
How many string heddles do I put on a heddle reed. I am buzy building myself a 48" table loom. But need to no how many heddles I will need per reed?
@@amandahattingh1189 It really depends on what you are weaving and how many shafts are on your loom, and obviously the width. Look at what the commercial looms come with...like the Ashfords etc.
Thank you. I almost done with my home built, 4 shaft 48" table loom. This is why I asked your input.
@@amandahattingh1189 I am building an 8 shaft 32 inch loom at the moment and I am putting 100 heddles per shaft...I think Ashford put 80 per shaft?
Very nice where did you get the copper nails from ??
Ebay or boat chandlers
@@harryrogers Did you cut them down ? because I can see long ones but not short ones and you must have used short ones as your board for the leather loops was not that thick
@@kevindesilva4588 Hi yes I used short ones inside and 1.25 inch for the walls....I pre drilled narrow holes for the long ones.
Hi Harry, another great video, really appreciate them. I made my first belt last week using bridle butt! I wanted to ask, what are your thoughts on using unfinished, un-dyed veg-tan tooling leather for belts and stamping/carving/tooling them with a specific pattern followed by finishing them with dye/oil/antique/resolene?
@@jayplays568 Hi yes it's another good option...nude russet belts are very popular in some areas as well.
@@harryrogers thanks. I had seen Russet Kip sides for tooling but I wasn't sure what the quality was like. Are sides of leather like this ok to use for belts/wallets?
@@jayplays568 Maybe for wallets, but for belts bovine is obviously thicker, unless you are doing some sort of layered construction
Maybe it was me but I had very poor luck with that tool
Hola gracias por el video,no entiendo inglés pero si entiendo lo que haces, una pregunta, puedo costurar parches a la gorra con esta máquina ?
Hi I love your video, I have a 66 as well, so I was wondering about the type of needle are you using, is it a special needle? I would like to know so I can start new projects on it since I finish cleaning and oiling it, thank you in advance
@@alexlopez8922 Hi I was using a leather point needle.
hi Harry i have a hobbies Gem Saw that was my Dads the same as yours 1938 model still goes my son has it now on display in his shed ,i had an electric version given to me with all the saw blades and books ,i still have over 100 hobbie books from 1937/8 ,they use to cost one penny that Dad bought over the years
Wow, that could keep you both busy!
❤❤❤
You are so right. I collect sewing machines. Of late I needed to sew of few patches on the sleeves of a shirt. Guess what, non of my machines could do it. I ended up doing it by hand.
Very nice, now you can stuff it with a paper to give it a proper shape. I was just reading about neetsfoot oil that it deteriorates leather over time, because it goes rancid. Hard to believe any info nowadays. Did the bleed dry out and changed the color, or the other side kept having that oily patch?
Nice work!
Thanks!
"Holes are a pleasure with this." I'm sold.
Very nicely done
Thanks for the inspiration!!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks a lot, now I want a froe!
unbelievable these english towns still have their medieval houses....in belgium and the netherlands they re replaced for the most part by stone constructions and very modern houses, not all beautiful!! I wish we preserved more of our old buidlings but i guess war and politics played a rol in this
Is your book called "The joy of socks"?
@@TheEnglishCountryHouse Well it could be! A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO USING A CIRCULAR SOCK KNITTING MACHINE: Machine with metal needles amzn.eu/d/03ezNa3h
Good Man !!!!!
Do you happen to have a model number for the bending jig and accessories? I tried to find them on their website with no luck. Thanks so much. Awesome video!
It was from their used section of tools, I no longer own it...sorry.
Hi I know you don’t now use a honing guide but which guide would fit the larger George Barnsley knife ? The blade skew plus the taper to the sides is making it hard to find a suitable honing guide. I use it for skiving leather for bookbinding so need about 13 degrees which is quite a fragile and shallow angle. Any advice greatly appreciated Paul
Great video Harry! One question, is it ok to not use edge paint/dye and just use an edge finisher like tokonole on the pale/undyed edge?
@@jayplays568 Hello...yes, except you may find you get a slightly irregular edge in places if the edge rounder does not give a clean cut.
@@harryrogers Thanks. Is it harder to use an edge beveller/rounder if I do not paint/dye the edge?
@@jayplays568 You edge bevel and then dye the edge, when you edge bevel, depending on the leather sometimes you get a clean edge, but sometimes it's slightly rougher, and if not coloured to match the leather finish, can look a bit messy....so it depends!
@@harryrogers got it, that makes sense. I'll have a look at the leather when it arrives.
How well did it last?
It's still standing and was in use on Monday!
@@harryrogers Cool thanks
Excellent helpful video.
I learned so much watching this. Thank you!
I’m very interested in making one of your spoon mules, but I couldn’t find the link to the plans you mentioned. Are they still available?
They are beautiful....
I didn't know about hedge laying. Tried it with some Rowan tress and is working great. Those rowans are hard to kill.
Hi! This is a fabulous video. I was unable to follow the direction to find the plans. Do you still have them available for sale?
How long does it take to make a sock (roughly)?
30 -45 minutes or so, it depends on the type, how fast you want to go, how you sew up the toe, how much practice you have. Some people are very quick and some will take a couple of hours or more.
Will you please post a video on how to get the bobbin into a 132k6 properly? Thank you🙏🏼
I am on the fence about the roller foot post bed clone as you have or a walking foot post bed. Have there been times this post bed had limited you when a walking foot post may have been handy. Salesmen say post beds with roller feet aren’t really designed for heavy stuff especially veg tanned. It seems these top and bottom feed are more popular than the triple feed post beds. Thanks in advance
Hi this set up is ideal for shoe uppers as the top and bottom feed give a very good transit. I did have a walking foot post bed, but for shoe work I personally found the walking foot was more difficult to guide. This machine in the video is not suited to heavy veg tan in my opinion its great for shoe uppers and wallets , but if you are sewing heavier veg tan leathers for strong bags etc I would be looking to the cylinder arm machines like in my bag making video.
I wouldn't have thought of cutting down the table. For my big Juki Industrial table, I set a domestic machine on the left side of the table getting double use out of it. When I need more work surface for a big project, I move the other machine. I have one of my more pretty vintage machines in a cabinet that I moved to the living room and it doubles as a desk. I think I am now totally out of space until my husband builds me a workshop.
That's a good idea
Which needle is this ?
I find that the system works better if you secure the leather to the work surface using a piece of double sided tape. Because if the leather moves you will lose your cutting line and it’s virtually impossible to get it back. Also be sure the blade is set deep enough to cut all the way through the leather; it’s best to make several passes with the blade rather than trying to get a full thickness cut with one pass.
Thank you. That was very helpful
Which needle is good for smaller hole size but long for bigger thickness of material aroun 2.5 inch thick
Thank you. Informative and right to the point. I'm thinking once the cover is made and installed, I might wet it all with a sponge to fore it to shrink and form-fit to the handle.
Yes that's a good idea Jim
Now a days you use thread condioner. In the grease/oil cup. Lowers the fuzz off the thread. In one of your videos you stated that the lower tension spring on the front of the machine is for winding bobbins. The manual states this extra tension spring on the front is for darning 😊
Thanks very much
You should consider making a pdf pattern to sell so we can make the same bag! Love this

Hello, when I try to sharpen the blade, it runs a bit and then stops -the motor doesn’t work further … what could be the cause ? Thanks!
Hi is the clutch lever jumping out of its slot ? It does not hold in its slot very well on any of these machines, so that is a likely cause.
Hi sir love your work I'm beginning to make leather can you send me any easy shoe pattern size 41 ?
